I usually don’t like romance protags, I find them all to be kinda annoying, generic, and boring, and they make a ton of frustrating and stupid decisions. They get manipulated very easily and take too long to stand up for themselves.

This series is so, so refreshing. Right off the bat, I was really intrigued by Beatrice. She’s very kind and well spoken, but more importantly, she’s very intelligent. She has a strong backbone and it’s satisfying to see her recognize and call out manipulation. She politely doesn’t take sh*t from annyone and stands her ground.

After all his behavior, I was certain they weren’t going to be able to make me sympathize for Ernest. Like I knew there was a tragic backstory reason for him acting like this, but I was so sure it wasn’t going to be good enough for me to feel bad for him. Surprisingly, it did. I don’t excuse his actions and I don’t forgive him, but I sympathize for his situation.

I kinda genuinely didn’t even care very much about the ‘better guy’ love interest. He’s fine, nice, all that, very supportive of Beatrice.

I don’t read this one for the romance, I read it for Beatrice <3
